»Exclusion from the national community. Persecution of homosexuals during the Nazi era«

The exhibition “Exclusion from the national community. Persecution of homosexuals in the Nazi era” is the result of the research projects and the working group Rosa Winkel at the Kulturring in Berlin eV since 1997. At that time, the aim was to work on overturning the Nazi sentences against homosexuals. The focus is on the biographies of homosexual men from 1933 to 1945, their persecution by the police and justice system, their death in concentration camps, but also their will to live, despite observation and threats, to live in friendship and love and to organize sociability, as the working group explains their approach . The exhibition sees itself as a project in the changing political culture of remembrance. Section 175 of the German Criminal Code (§ 175 StGB) existed from January 1, 1871 to June 10, 1994. It criminalized sexual acts between male persons and thus enabled the prosecution of gay and bisexual men. A new dimension of persecution came when the Nazis came to power and began completely destroying the queer infrastructure in March 1933. In 1935, Section 175 was tightened. Now any lewd act between men could be reported and punished if it was associated with a “voluptuous intention”. The persecution of lesbian women and that of trans* and intersex people was also unrelenting during the Nazi era, but here other political and moral reasons for detention were often sought because the legislation was less concrete. The exhibition's supporting program will address the different situations of persecution and show how discrimination, state repression and criminal prosecution continued in the Federal Republic. The year 2024 will mark the 30th anniversary of the abolition of Section 175 of the Criminal Code - for 123 years it was the basis for the persecution of gay men.
The event is part of the supporting program for the exhibition “Exclusion from the national community. Persecution of homosexuals in the Nazi era” – a work result of the research projects and the Rosa Winkel working group at the Kulturring in Berlin eV since 1997.
The exhibition and events are carried out in a cooperation between the Rat&Tat Center for Queer Life and the Stadtbibliothek Bremen with the support of the Gay Friends Bremen Foundation.
