"Persecution of trans* and gender-nonconforming people in the Nazi dictatorship. A lecture by Jako Wende"
Description
The situation of trans and gender-nonconforming people during the Nazi dictatorship has received little research attention. Trans activist Jako Wende aims to fill this gap and has documented numerous individual stories using historical records. The presentation uses examples to illustrate the persecution. For instance, eyewitness accounts shed light on the situation of trans and/or gender-nonconforming people in the Lichtenburg concentration camp under National Socialism. To further illustrate the conditions in the camp, Kurt von Ruffin, who was imprisoned there under Paragraph 175 (the abortion law), also speaks.
The event is part of the supporting program for the exhibition “Exclusion from the national community. Persecution of homosexuals in the Nazi era” – a result of the research projects and the Rosa Winkel working group at the Kulturring in Berlin eV since 1997.
The exhibition and events are a collaboration between the Rat&Tat Center for Queer Life and the Stadtbibliothek Bremen with support from the Bremen Gay Friends Foundation. The exhibition was provided by Kulturring Berlin and the Rosa Winkel Working Group.
