Answers to frequently asked questions

  • What do I need to register at the Stadtbibliothek ?

    • Your ID card or passport (including registration confirmation).
    • Please pay the annual fee for your BIB CARD

    Children and young people up to 18 years of age also need:

    • Signature of a legal guardian on the registration for the BIB CARD
    •  Identity card or passport with registration confirmation from the legal guardian (ID photo or copy is sufficient).
  • How much does the BIBCARD cost?

    • The BIB CARD is free for:
      • Everyone up to their 18th birthday
      • All students, trainees
      • All students at universities in the state of Bremen
    • CARD subscription costs depending on the age group:
      • 18-27 years 13 euros
      • 28-64 years 22 euros
      • from 65 years 13 euros
      • (The art loan, worth 10 euros per year, is included in the subscription price)
    • If you do not want to use our subscription, the BIB CARD for 12 months depending on the age group
      • 18-27 years: 16 euros
      • 28-64 years: 26 euros
      • from 65 years: 16 euros
  • What discounts or benefits are there?

    You will receive a discount from us upon presentation:

    • a pension certificate
    • a Bremen pass
    • a certificate from the employment agency about receipt of unemployment benefit I or citizen's benefit/basic security
    • a certificate from the Office for Social Services regarding receipt of subsistence assistance
    • Basic security in old age or in the event of incapacity to work or BaföG

    You will receive a discount from us upon presentation: 

    • a valid KammerCard (from the Bremen Chamber of Employees)
    • You have a library card for the Institut Français or the Instituto Cervantes and provide us with a receipt for the fees paid there when registering

    BIBC ARD is free:

    • For students and trainees of all ages. Please show us your current student ID or proof of training.
    • For students at the University of Bremen (University of Bremen, University of Bremen and University of the Arts). Please show us your current student ID or semester ticket.
    • For refugees .
  • How long is my BIBCARD valid?

    • Subscription BIBC ARD : Valid permanently and without interruption. If you choose the subscription, you don't have to worry about renewals.
    • Regular BIB CARD : If you do not wish to use the subscription, the BIB CARD valid for 12 months from the date of issue or renewal. Please remember to renew CARD
    • Reusing the BIBC ARD : If you no longer need CARD We can reactivate the card for you at any time if you wish to use it again in the future.
  • What advantages does the ABO-BIBCARD have?

    • The ABO-BIB CARD is cheaper.
    • With the ABO-BIB CARD you can enjoy full media enjoyment without interruption - the validity is automatically extended.
    • With the ABO-BIB CARD , you can borrow art free of charge. This way you save 10 euros every year.
  • Who can purchase the ABO-BIBCARD?

    • Anyone aged 18 or over who pays an annual fee
      CARD Reasons for discounts (Bremen Pass, etc.) cannot be taken into account.
  • Where can I get the ABO-BIBCARD?

    • Come to us in the library. We will issue you the ABO-BIB CARD . Please bring your valid ID card with you when registering.
    • If you already have a BIB CARD , you can easily switch to the ABO-BIB CARD .
  • How do I issue an order for direct debit

  • How can I cancel the ABO-BIBCARD?

    • no longer need the ABO-BIB CARD It is important that your cancellation is made in writing and received by us no later than 6 weeks before the end of the paid period of use. The form can be downloaded here >>
  • Information on payment when registering online

    • After you register online, we will check your details. You will receive an email the next working day (Mon-Fri) with your BIB CARD number and payment details. By paying you confirm that you live in postcode area 27 or 28.

  • How can I register online?

    • If your first or second place of residence is in the zip code areas 27 and 28, you can  register online here .
  • What can I do if my BIBCARD is gone?

    • Please let us know immediately so that we can block your BIB CARD . This protects you from possible card misuse. You are liable until the card is blocked.
    • We will issue you a replacement ID card for a small fee.
  • Can I pass on my BIBCARD?

    • No, the BIB CARD is not transferable. If you would like to authorize another person to extend your BIB CARD , please issue a power of attorney.
  • What happens to my personal data?

    • The Stadtbibliothek processes the personal data of users required for the services and uses them exclusively for these purposes. Data processing is subject to the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation and the Bremen Implementation Act for the EU GDPR. The loan data is only stored until the returned media has been checked. Read more about our privacy policy .
  • What do I do if my address has changed?

    • Please let us know your new address immediately. You can do this by email, telephone or in person at the libraries.
    • You can also change your data yourself online. To do this, log in to your account and select “User data”.
  • Where can I borrow media with my BIBCARD?

    • With your BIB CARD you can borrow Stadtbibliothek Bremen To find out about the different libraries and their respective opening times, please visit the Libraries page . There you will find a complete overview.
    • Digital media for borrowing, streaming and downloading can be found on the Media .
  • Are there additional rental costs?

    • With a valid BIB CARD you can borrow Stadtbibliothek In the Central Library, additional fees apply for the special bestseller offer and art loans.
  • How long can I borrow media?

    • The loan period for most media is three weeks.

    There are the following exceptions:

    • New feature films and new music CDs for adults from the Central Library have a one-week loan period.
    • Graphics and art objects have a 12-week loan period.
    • The bus library loan periods may vary due to the timetable.
    • You can find the end of the loan period on your loan receipt or in your customer account ( see online services ).
  • How can I extend the loan period for my borrowed media?

    You have various options for extending the loan period of your media: 

    • You can renew your media yourself via our homepage. To do this, click on the “My Account” function and enter your BIB CARD number and password.
    • Come to us in the library.
    • You can extend your media by calling 0421 / 361 24465 or your respective branch.
    • For customers of the bus library, there may be return dates that deviate from the timetable for online renewals. The next stopping date for the stop used after the issued date then applies.
  • How often can I extend the loan period?

    • Borrowed media can be renewed twice if they are not reserved by other customers.

    There are the following exceptions: 

    • New feature films and new music CDs for adults from the Central Library can be renewed once.
    • Magazines and bestsellers from the Central Library cannot be renewed.
    • Media from the Library of Things cannot be renewed.
    • The extension is possible at the earliest 7 days before the end of the loan period.
    • In the bus library, media ordered for you from other branches can only be renewed on site.

     

  • What happens if the loan period is exceeded?

    • Late fees apply. You pay 0.30 euros per day and medium. Fees are also charged for the delivery of reminders ( see Terms of Use and Fees ).
    • Please note: Fees must be paid immediately. If you are late, you will be charged a reminder.
    • Other late fees apply to media from the bus library, graphics, art objects and bestsellers from the central library ( see usage and fee regulations ).
  • How do I order media from other libraries?

    • Ordering from the central library or the branches is free of charge. Please contact your local library.
    • We can order many media for you outside of Bremen via the external loan service. This service costs 1.50 euros. Regardless of whether the desired title is delivered or not. Books that are available in stores for a low price (10 euros) are exempt from this.
    • You can also order media from the bus library. This works via this form .
  • How can I reserve borrowed media?

    You can reserve media using the online catalog. We can also make reservations for you in our libraries. Each reservation costs 1 euro.

    How to reserve a medium: 

    • In the online catalog, select which library you would like to pick up the medium from.
    • Find the desired medium in the catalog and make the reservation by clicking on the corresponding button.
    • If reservation is not possible because the medium is not in the collection of your selected library, please contact our staff.

    As soon as the desired medium is ready for you to pick up, we will notify you. The reservation can be canceled free of charge until the medium is available.

    • You can also reserve media in the bus library. This works via this form .
  • Where can I return borrowed media?

    • You can return media in any of our libraries during opening hours - regardless of where you borrowed the media.
    • You can also return media at the bus library stops. Games and works of art as well as items borrowed from the Library of Things are excluded.
    • CARD to return it . You can also bring media back for other people.
    • Some of our libraries also offer return options outside of opening hours. Information can be found here .
  • How can I borrow bestsellers?

    • Do you want to read the latest DVDs, novels or non-fiction books from the SPIEGEL bestseller list and don't want to wait long? No problem! With our bestseller service you pay 3.00 euros for each title that you take with you. The loan period is, as usual, three weeks. Unfortunately, pre-orders and extensions are not possible.
  • Is there free WiFi in the libraries?

    Yes, you can use our WiFi free of charge in all of our library locations.

  • Can I use computers in the libraries?

    You will find modern computers in all of our libraries (not the bus library). These computers have open office programs and printers that can do black and white and color printing. If you have a valid BIB CARD , you can use these computers for as long as you want. Internet usage on these computers is limited to two hours per day.

  • Where can I view the status of my BIBCARD account?

    • On our homepage you can your BIB CARD My Account . Your borrowed media, your orders, your reservations and any fees incurred are listed there.
    • You also have the option here to change your email address, password or personal data in your user data and to make search settings. Or you can create a personal watch list.
  • What do I need to view and manage my BIBCARD account?

    • You need your BIB CARD number. This can be found on the back of your BIB CARD under the barcode. Enter this 11-digit number without hyphens and without spaces.
    • You also need your personal password. When you register, you will receive a six-digit password generated from your date of birth. We recommend that you change this after receipt.
  • What do I do if I forget my online password?

    • If you have stored your email address, you can have your personal online password automatically sent to you by email. To do this, call up the “Account / Extension” function, click on the “Forgot password” link and then enter your BIB CARD number. A new password will be sent to you immediately.
    • If you have not provided us with an email address, you will receive the password at one of our service locations.
  • How can I borrow media from the Onleihe?

    • You can borrow media on your computer, tablet, smartphone or e-reader. Detailed information can be found here .
  • How do I borrow media from Overdrive / Libby?

    • You can borrow media on your computer, tablet, smartphone or e-reader. Detailed information can be found here . You can find information specifically about e-readers here .
  • How can I read newspapers and magazines on PressReader?

    • You can read media on your computer, tablet or smartphone. You can via www.pressreader.com CARD and your personal password. To do this, select “Library or Group” and then “ Stadtbibliothek Bremen ”.

     

  • How can I watch films on Filmfriend?

    • You can stream Filmfriend on your computer, tablet, smartphone or SmartTV/AppleTV. Detailed information can be found here or here .
  • What is the DigiBib?

    The DigiBib (Digital Library) is an information portal with extensive search options. It opens access to databases in all subject areas, electronic journals and national and international library catalogs.

  • Where and how can I borrow “Things”?

    • You can find the Library of Things in the central library on the second floor and also in the Lesum library. If you would like to borrow something, simply speak to our staff. First we check whether the item you want to borrow is complete. You will then have to sign our lending rules. Our staff will explain everything to you and help you with the loan.
  • What do I need to borrow “Things”?

    • You need a valid BIB CARD from the Stadtbibliothek Bremen .
  • How old do I have to be to borrow “things”?

    • The minimum age for borrowing items from the “Library of Things” is 18 years.
  • Where and when do I have to return borrowed items?

    • The borrowed items must be returned during the opening hours of the respective library. Returns outside opening hours are not possible.
  • How long is the loan period for “things”?

    • The loan period is a maximum of three weeks. An extension of the loan period is not possible.
  • What happens if something in the Library of Things breaks?

    • If an item you borrowed from the “Library of Things” breaks, you are responsible for it and must be liable for the damage. It is important that you report such damage immediately.
  • Can I borrow several items from the Library of Things at the same time?

    • You can borrow up to three items at a time.
  • How are consumables handled at the Library of Things?

    • When renting items that require consumables, you must purchase these materials yourself.
  • What is art lending?

    A municipal, public collection of modern and contemporary art available to borrow from the central library of the Stadtbibliothek Bremen . Some of the works of art can be found in the showroom next to the reading garden and in the exhibition area on the 1st floor. Further works of art from the Graphothek's inventory are in the stacks and can be ordered.

  • How can I borrow the works?

    You can browse the range of works on site and borrow them from the information desk on the 1st floor or select them from the comfort of your own home and pre-order them by email at kunstausleihe@stabi-hb.de to pick them up later. You will receive handy packaging for transport. The loan period is 12 weeks, with the possibility of being extended twice. Special conditions apply for companies.

  • How much does the art loan cost?

    The ABO-BIB CARD includes the art loan, otherwise you pay 10 euros in addition to the BIB CARD . Companies, medical practices or law firms pay a total of 100 euros per year. As with all media that you borrow from the Stadtbibliothek Bremen , you are also liable for the works of art you borrow at the current value.
