Portrait: Matthias Lehmann / Book cover: “Parallel”

»Matthias Lehmann: Graphic Novels – a contemporary approach to the topic of § 175?”

Description

In conversation with the journalist and reviewer Markus Pfalzgraf Matthias Lehmann will discuss the artistic means of dealing with the persecution according to Section 175. In “Parallel” Lehmann tells the story of Karl Kling, who reveals himself in a letter to his daughter Hella, who has broken off contact with him. Retrospectively, Hella and the readers learn about Karl's failed marriages, broken family relationships - and his love for men. From the last years of the war until the 1980s, “Parallel” follows Karl Kling's efforts to conform to bourgeois norms in order to be able to live his sexuality in secret. “Parallel” simultaneously paints a panorama of a German society in which homosexuality was outlawed and punished until 1994 and also tells of the courage to defy these resistances. Markus Pfalzgraf works as a television journalist for ARD in Stuttgart and writes reviews of comics and graphic novels.

The event is part of the supporting program for the exhibition “Exclusion from the national community. Persecution of homosexuals in the Nazi era” – a work result of the research projects and the Rosa Winkel working group at the Kulturring in Berlin eV since 1997.

The exhibition and events are carried out in a cooperation between the Rat&Tat Center for Queer Life and the Stadtbibliothek Bremen with the support of the Gay Friends Bremen Foundation. The exhibition was made available by the Kulturring Berlin and the AG Rosa Winkel.
