Welcome to the Stadtbibliothek Bremen !

We look forward to welcoming you to our libraries.

Libraries are places of social and cultural communication, free access to information, inspiration and relaxation. Our rooms with their diverse offerings and services are open to everyone. We value diversity. We want everyone to feel respected. Everyone should be able to pursue their interests undisturbed.

By visiting our libraries, you agree to our house rules and terms of use.

We thank you for adhering to the following rules:

  1. All visitors behave in the library in such a way that other visitors feel comfortable and can have a pleasant stay.
  1. Media such as books and all other items that can be borrowed, as well as the furniture, facilities and rooms of the library, must not be damaged or contaminated. Visitors are liable for any damage they cause.
  1. Eating and drinking is permitted with due caution. In case of doubt, the staff instructions apply.
  1. Smoking and the consumption of other intoxicants (alcohol, other drugs, etc.) are not permitted.
  1. Seating and workstations are available to all visitors. Therefore they cannot be blocked permanently, for example for storing luggage or sleeping.  
  1. Library staff are authorized to collect bags, etc. in order to protect the Stadtbibliothek Bremen in the interest of all visitors.
  1. The employees of the Stadtbibliothek Bremen have house rules and exercise them in the interests of everyone present. This means that the instructions of the staff must be followed immediately, especially in the event of danger or fire (alarm signal).
  1. All visitors are prohibited from interfering with human freedom and dignity (Article 1 of the Basic Law) in words, writing or gestures. Discriminatory statements about origin, disability, impairment, (external) characteristics, gender, sexual orientation, age or religious belief are prohibited. Verbal, written or gesture statements that can be assigned to an extremist context are also not permitted
  1. The access and distribution of illegal, violent, pornographic or racist content and data, the violation of copyright and the manipulation of the hardware and software offered are prohibited, lead to bans and may be reported.
  1. Animals that walk freely or on a leash are not allowed. Guide dogs for the blind or dogs that accompany people with disabilities may be carried on a leash.
  1. The Stadtbibliothek Bremen assumes no liability for private items that go missing. If possible, wardrobe and bags can be included. Lockers must be cleared on the day of use, before the library closes. Otherwise, the lockers will be cleared by staff and the items found will be treated as lost property.
  1. Lost property will be disposed of or stored in the library for a maximum of four weeks. In individual cases they are then handed over to the central lost property office. For lost items from the lockers, an administrative fee of 1 euro will be charged upon collection; if the key is lost, this will be charged.
  1. Commercial advertising, advertising for political parties, fundraising and the distribution of goods by third parties are not permitted. The library management will decide on any exceptions.
  1. The library staff decides on the display of information material and posters on the basis of the public mandate. There is no entitlement to an expense. Only the staff carries out the display. Collection of signatures from citizens' initiatives etc. must be approved in advance by management.
  1. Persons who repeatedly or significantly violate these house rules may be completely or temporarily excluded from using the library or from using all libraries of the Stadtbibliothek Bremen .

These house rules come into force on December 1, 2023 and replace the house rules of July 1, 2016.
