Welcome to the Stadtbibliothek Bremen!
We are delighted to welcome you to our libraries.
Libraries are places for social and cultural communication, free access to information, inspiration, and relaxation. Our spaces, with their diverse offerings and services, are open to everyone. We value diversity. We want everyone to feel respected. Everyone should be able to pursue their interests undisturbed.
By visiting our libraries, you agree to our house rules and terms of use.
We thank you for adhering to the following rules:
- All visitors behave in the library in such a way that other visitors feel comfortable and can have a pleasant stay.
- Media, such as books, and all other loanable items, as well as the library's furniture, fixtures, and rooms, must not be damaged or soiled. Visitors are liable for any damage they cause.
- Eating and drinking are permitted with due caution. In case of doubt, follow the instructions of the staff.
- Smoking and the consumption of other intoxicants (alcohol, other drugs, etc.) is not permitted.
- Seating and workspaces are available to all visitors. Therefore, they cannot be permanently blocked, for example for storing luggage or sleeping.
- Library staff are authorized to check bags and similar items in order to protect the Stadtbibliothek Bremen in the interest of all visitors.
- The staff of the Stadtbibliothek Bremen have the right to control access to the premises and exercise this right in the interest of all those present. This means that the instructions of the staff, especially in case of danger or fire (alarm signal), must be followed immediately.
- All visitors are prohibited from infringing upon human freedom and dignity (Article 1 of the Basic Law) through words, writing, or gestures. Discriminatory statements regarding origin, disability, impairment, (external) characteristics, gender, sexual orientation, age, or religious beliefs are prohibited. Statements in words, writing, or gestures that can be attributed to an extremist context are also not permitted
- Accessing and distributing illegal, violence-glorifying, pornographic or racist content and data, copyright infringement, and manipulation of the offered hardware and software are prohibited, will result in bans from the premises, and may be reported to the authorities.
- Animals running free or on a leash are not permitted. Guide dogs for the blind or assistance dogs for people with disabilities may be brought in, provided they are kept on a leash.
- The Stadtbibliothek Bremen accepts no liability for lost or stolen personal belongings. Where possible, coats and bags can be stored in lockers. Lockers must be emptied on the day of use, before the library closes. Otherwise, staff will empty the lockers and treat any items found inside as lost property.
- Lost and found items are either disposed of or kept in the library for a maximum of four weeks. After that, they are handed over to the central lost and found office in individual cases. A €1 administrative fee is charged for items collected from lockers; if the key is lost, it will be billed separately.
- Commercial advertising, advertising for political parties, fundraising, and the sale of goods by third parties are not permitted. The library management decides on any exceptions.
- Library staff decide on the display/posting of informational materials and posters based on the library's public mandate. There is no entitlement to display. Display is carried out exclusively by staff. Petitions from citizens' initiatives and similar groups must be approved in advance by management.
- Persons who repeatedly or seriously violate these house rules may be completely or temporarily excluded from using the library or from using all libraries of the Stadtbibliothek Bremen .
We are delighted to have you here and wish you a pleasant stay!
This house rules policy comes into effect on December 1, 2023 and replaces the house rules policy of July 1, 2016.
