"Gender-inclusive language on … TAGALOG – Gender-neutral yet special"

Tagalog is one of the ergative languages ​​spoken in the Philippines, exhibiting features of gender neutrality. In this practice-oriented presentation, our teacher, Joyce Salita, introduce us to her language, its regional, political, and historical context, and practical usage scenarios. She will present examples of gender-neutral features as well as instances of gender marking. Finally, she will offer insights into the impact of these features on spoken language in Philippine society.

The series "Gender-Inclusive Language…" is organized by the Language Center of the Universities in the State of Bremen in cooperation with the Senator for the Environment, Climate and Science, the Bremen Language Council, the Instituto Cervantes, the Goethe Institute, and the Institut français. The series focuses on egalitarian language, respectful treatment of genders, and non-sexist communication. It explores how different languages ​​address this highly topical issue and what solutions each language offers. Further lectures are planned at various locations and in different languages, including French, German, and English.
