The beekeeper takes honeycombs from a bee hive.

Honey from the Vegesack library garden

It's humming and buzzing in the north of Bremen: a few weeks ago, three colonies of bees moved into the library garden in Vegesack. The busy little insects are not only exciting to watch, they also help to make our library garden more sustainable. However, the colleagues in Vegesack only sponsored the bees. They are cared for by the Roose beekeeping company from Zeven, which was looking for a location for three hives in Bremen.

“The beekeeper regularly checks on his colonies,” explains Andrea Schröder, who looks after the bees in the Vegesack library. “It’s not so easy to get close to set-up hives like here,” she says. The beekeeper's visits are always a good opportunity for customers to look over the expert's shoulder at work. And they also take advantage of the opportunity. “When the beekeeper was there recently to look after his animals, he was immediately surrounded by interested people,” says Schröder. If everything goes well, the first Vegesacker library honey should be harvested in the fall.

Events around the world of bees are being planned for the coming year.
