Janusz Korczak bust finds a new place in the central library

The bust of the important Polish doctor, children's book author and educator Janusz Korczak was ceremoniously inaugurated in the Central Library. For decades, the bust - a gift from Bremen's twin city of Danzig - adorned the old headquarters of the German-Polish Society and the State Center for Civic Education on Osterdeich. With the move of the two institutions to Birkenstrasse, a new prominent place was sought, which has now been found in the central library.

Christian Kuhlmann ( Stadtbibliothek Bremen Directorate), Uwe Metschke (Chairman of the German-Polish Society Bremen eV), Consul Mariusz Pindel (Head of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Hamburg) and Dr. Thomas Töpfer (Head of the State Center for Political Education).

The bust was then unveiled by the invited children from the St. Johann children's group. This was followed by a small Janusz Korczak program for the group of children present by Marlies Winkelheide from the Janusz Korczak sibling library in Lilienthal.

Janusz Korczak (born July 22, 1878 or 1879 in Warsaw; died after August 5, 1942 in the Treblinka extermination camp), was a Polish doctor, children's book author and important educator. He became known above all for his commitment to children. So he accompanied the children from his orphanage when they were transported to the Treblinka extermination camp, even though that also meant death for himself.
