Bremen library director Barbara Lison elected as the new federal chairwoman of the dbv

Barbara Lison becomes the new federal chairwoman of the German Library Association (dbv). At the dbv general meeting on March 17, 2016 in Leipzig, the director of the Stadtbibliothek Bremen was elected with a large majority for three years. Representatives of over 2,100 member libraries were eligible to vote in the postal vote.  

Barbara Lison at her first general meeting as chairwoman: “Libraries offer great opportunities for the future of a digitalizing society. In addition to the traditional collection of primarily written material and their information and cultural mission, libraries have an important future function in networking people, knowledge and media. Their function as a motor for social integration also makes libraries an indispensable partner.”

Barbara Lison, director of the Stadtbibliothek Bremen since 1992, has been active in various library committees nationally and internationally for many years. She has been a board member of the dbv for several years and a managing board member of the Bremen regional association. She is also Vice President of EBLIDA (European umbrella organization of national library, information, archive and documentation associations) and was a board member of the world association of libraries, the International Federation of Library Associations and Istitutions (IFLA), until the beginning of 2016. She will take up the dbv federal chairmanship from April 1, 2016.

The German Library Association (dbv) has been committed to libraries in Germany for more than 65 years. The association has around 2,100 member libraries nationwide (with over 20,000 employees), which are visited by around 200 million people every year. His aim is to make the impact of libraries in culture and education visible and to strengthen their role in society. The dbv's tasks also include promoting books and reading as an indispensable basis for science and information, as well as promoting the use of contemporary information technologies.
