AnSchuB for Bremen primary school children

In order to promote the joy of reading at primary school age, the Stadtbibliothek Bremen together with the Senator for Education, has been implementing the reading promotion project AnSchuB (our BIBCARD for all school children) since 2015. Every year at the turn of the semester (in February), all first graders in Bremen receive a reading motivation package from the Stadtbibliothek Bremen . Included is a specially designed BIBCARD and information for parents about the possibilities of use. On Wednesday, February 1st, the Senator for Children and Education, Dr. Claudia Bogedan and the deputy library director Lucia Werder handed out AnSchuB cards to the students in the two first grades of the elementary school on Glockenstrasse in Hemelingen.

After being welcomed by school principal Sylvia Rugen, the school's third graders took the stage with their “Reading Suitcase Rap”. Education Senator Dr. Claudia Bogedan said in her speech that campaigns like AnSchub are important in order to awaken the joy of reading as early as possible and thanked the Stadtbibliothek Bremen as an important partner in promoting reading: “Reading and understanding what you read are incredibly important skills. With the AnSchub Card, children can borrow their first books and develop these skills. You can let your imagination fly, visit foreign countries, experience adventures and learn a lot. Reading promotes language skills and creativity. I used to devour tons of books and now I really enjoy reading them to my small children. Reading is just fun too.”

A maximum of 2 books can be borrowed at the same time from the AnSchuB-BIBCARD. “If you would like to borrow other media, such as CDs, DVDs and games, your parents just need to fill out a registration form. Then your card will be converted into a regular BIBCARD,” explained Lucia Werder. She also thanked the Collegium Foundation, without whose financial support the implementation would not have been possible. After the speeches, Friedrich the Magician thrilled the students with his magic show, at the end of which he conjured up an AnSchuB BIBCARD.

The Stadtbibliothek Bremen invites parents to come to the library with their child for the first time and to receive the welcome gift: the Pixi book from the library mascot Rabe Kessi, on the back of which stamps can be collected with every loan. This accompanying activity also motivates people to visit the library again. The special thing about this project: the Stadtbibliothek Bremen distributes library cards throughout the city with a political mandate. The Bremen Senate decided in March 2013 that, in coordination with the Stadtbibliothek Bremen , it should be ensured that all primary school students and their parents are informed about the free BIBCARD offer and that a BIBCARD is made available to all primary school students. To this end, the Stadtbibliothek Bremen and the Senator for Children and Education work closely together. The reading motivation packages are distributed via the schools.
