Exactly 40 years ago - on September 1, 1976 - the Bremen bus library was opened on Bremen's market square. The rolling branch of the Stadtbibliothek has been traveling through Bremen for four decades and, with over 25 stops, has long been an integral part of the cityscape. 40 years of the Stadtbibliothek 's bus library: there's a lot of life in it and that was celebrated on Wednesday, September 1st with a big anniversary event on the Bremen market square.

In his greetings, Mayor Carsten Sieling emphasized the importance of the Stadtbibliothek as an institution and of reading in general. After the deputy director of the Stadtbibliothek , Lucia Werder, in conversation with the head of the bus library, Matthias Weyh, gave a brief overview of the 40-year history of the bus library, the board of the “Friends of the Stadtbibliothek Bremen ” association handed over book packages to the bus library. Afterwards, Mayor Sieling, Lucia Werder and Birgit Krull from the support association cut the Hauptmeier confectionery's birthday cake.

There was also a colorful program for young and old. In addition to activities such as wheel of fortune games or making miniature buses, the hands-on exhibition “Media Usage in Transition – From Pong to App Books” was particularly well received. Visitors to the bus library were also able to borrow media or have a BIBCARD issued. The Bremen musicians “Zaches & Zinnober” provided the musical accompaniment.
