On the International Day of Democracy: The Holocaust, 80 years later. With Eike Besuden and Franziska Mencz
Description
The documentary "Give Up? – Never!" and the book EMIGRANTE by Eike Besuden offer insights into the question: What remains 80 years after the Holocaust, illustrated by the example of the Bamberger family from Bremen?
While the film is a piece of remembrance culture, the interviews with the family's grandchildren connect it to the current political situation in the USA and Europe. The crucial question is: How can we contextualize current events against the backdrop of history, in the sense that "Never again" is now? The film "Give Up? – Never!" tells the story of Julius Bamberger, a former department store owner in Bremen, who founded his store at the beginning of the last century, built it into a thriving business with 650 employees over the following three decades, and was then arrested, dispossessed, and expelled from the city by the Nazis because he was Jewish. Following the film screening, actress Franziska Mencz will give a reading.
