Demokratorium – Talking. Listening. Understanding. How do we want to talk to each other?
Description
Do you care about our democracy? Are you also worried about the social climate? Public debates are becoming increasingly harsh, and even our private political conversations are becoming more and more difficult. We want to promote democratic coexistence. To relearn how to truly listen and speak to one another respectfully. To understand each other again. Let's revitalize democratic dialogue! Join our new workshop series "Demokratorium – Talking. Listening. Understanding."! Together, we will learn how to have constructive conversations about politics.
Module 5:
Fact-Checking and Boundaries in Political Discussions
When political discussions become confrontational, there can be many reasons, especially when participants rely on differing or even false information. In this workshop, we will reflect on the possibilities and limitations of fact-checking. We will also practice using methods of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to respectfully set boundaries in political discussions.
The workshop is free, practice-oriented, and open to all interested parties. Workshop leaders: Marcus Strittmatter (certified trainer for Nonviolent Communication and mediator) and Jule Kehr-Ritz (media educator).
This workshop is the final module of the five-part workshop series "Demokratorium – Speaking. Listening. Understanding." The modules build upon each other but can also be attended individually. The series is organized by the Stadtbibliothek Bremen in cooperation with the Bremen State Agency for Civic Education.
Further modules of this workshop series:
Module 1: How do we want to talk to each other? Discussion culture in public spaces.
Module 2: Engaging in dialogue through listening and understanding
Module 3: Listening between feeling and opinion. Emotions in politics and media
Module 4: Speaking Effectively: Clarity and Connection Instead of Confrontation
The "Demokratorium" workshop series is supported by the "Europe Challenge." The "Europe Challenge" is a program of the European Cultural Foundation. It connects libraries and communities to address Europe's key challenges—social, digital, and environmental—by implementing creative solutions at the local level. The 2025/26 edition is generously supported by public funding from Arts Council England, the Fondazione Cariplo, and the Scottish Library and Information Council.
