World Alpha Day
Description
Every year on September 8th, International Literacy Day place: This day raises awareness of the situation of all people who cannot read and write, or have limited literacy skills.
In Bremen and Bremerhaven, around 52,000 German-speaking people aged 18-64 have limited reading and writing skills. They face a wide range of challenges and questions every day: Which bus stop does the bus leave from? What are the side effects of my medication? How do I cook according to a recipe? What does the teacher's letter to parents say?
Together with stakeholders in Bremen, the Senator for Children and Education wants to use International Literacy Day to highlight the situation of people with low literacy skills and to focus on their diverse challenges in a society dominated by written language.
The aim is to engage in dialogue with Bremen residents, to raise awareness of various learning opportunities, and to reduce barriers for people with low literacy skills. After all, one in eight German-speaking adults of working age is considered to have low literacy skills.
This year's World Literacy Day includes participation from colleagues at the Stadtbibliothek Bremen, the Bremen Adult Education Center, the Findorff Reading and Writing Workshop, the Grone Education Center, the Training and Further Education Center for the Bremen Public Service, the German Red Cross project "Simply German - Strong Together" and the Senator for Children and Education.
