"Diversity and Tolerance in 19th-Century Istanbul: Ulrich J. Seetzen's Constantinople Diary"

Description

Around 1800, the sciences were not yet as specialized as they are today. While Alexander von Humboldt, for example, embarked on an interdisciplinary research trip to South America, Ulrich J. Seetzen traveled to Northwest Asia and the Arabian Peninsula. He spent nearly a year in Istanbul, then Constantinople. He recorded his impressions and observations in a comprehensive diary. Seetzen was particularly impressed by the diversity and interplay of cultures and belief systems in the city on the Bosporus; he captured these in their everyday cultures and religious practices vividly and with empathy. Prof. Dr. Detlev Quintern (Turkish-German University, Istanbul) will speak about the experiences and impressions of the scholar Seetzen in what was already a metropolis at that time and will also offer insights into Istanbul today. Is the cultural polyphony of that era still present in the only city spanning two continents?
