“How do we want to live?” – House of Commons debate

Description

The event format “Lower House Debate” aims to stimulate social exchange and promote respectful dialogue on future issues.

In this debate, the audience has the opportunity to speak. The moderators briefly introduce the topics and pose questions. The audience must decide: Do they sit on the "yes" or "no" side of the room? In the subsequent discussion, everyone can explain their own position. Who is persuaded and switches sides? This format encourages listening to others and exchanging arguments.

The topic of this debate is:
“Society in a field of tension: values, language and freedom of expression”.

Is our society increasingly shaped by a "left-wing hegemony"—or are we instead experiencing a conservative culture war? Public debates on topics such as migration, diversity, anti-discrimination, and gender-sensitive language are passionately conducted. But are we still listening to each other? The accusation quickly arises that one is no longer allowed to say what one thinks. Are we losing the ability to accept other positions? Where is the line between legitimate criticism, populist rhetoric, and ideology that threatens democracy? How is our language changing—and what does that say about our values? We want to discuss how to have better discussions without abandoning a clear stance.

Moderation: Carina Frey and Rainer Kurlemann, both founding members of ZukunftsReporter, a research collective for future topics.

Organizers: Stadtbibliothek Bremen, the Friends of the Stadtbibliothek Bremen , and the Bremen State Democracy Center. The event is Association part of the federal program "Democracy Live!"
