It all begins at 18 in New York. A stranger, unemployed, gay – with only $50 in his pocket. But then he meets people. Ordinary people. A cleaning woman in Manhattan, a refugee from Haiti. His first job: bus driver in Pennsylvania. From there, Lutz van Dijk us with him on "The Wide World." To this day. No longer a stranger. At home in different countries and continents. He tells us about the stages of an extraordinary life: New York, Hamburg, Jerusalem, Amsterdam, Cape Town. Following the success of "Someday the Wide World" (2024), about his upbringing in West Berlin during the time of the Wall and his departure for New York at 18, we now accompany Lutz van Dijk in "The Wide World" to the present day, at 70. A plea for the right to a home – everywhere in the world.

Lutz van Dijk, born in West Berlin in 1955, moved to the USA at the age of 18, and also spent time in Canada and Mexico. He later became a teacher in Hamburg, where he earned his doctorate with a dissertation on "Teacher Behavior During the Nazi Era" before joining the staff of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam in 1992. Since 2001, he and his husband have been involved in a township project for disadvantaged children in Cape Town. His international commitment to the peace and LGBTIQ+ movements was recognized with the Stonewall Award in 2023.
