Portrait of Will Gmehling

Reading for children and great hands-on activities at the Horner Bad

Description

The event kicks off with children's and young adult author Will Gmehling. He will be reading from his book "Freibad – ein ganzer Sommer unter dem Himmel" (Open-Air Swimming Pool – A Whole Summer Under the Sky) at the Horner Bad swimming pool. In addition, the Stadtbibliothek!

Because the Bukowski siblings saved a toddler from drowning at the indoor swimming pool, they're famous for a few days. But even better than the fame is the pass to the outdoor pool they receive for their heroic deed: free entry for a long summer that will be special for everyone! Alf is ten, his thoughts are consumed by starting school after the holidays, the lifeguard's beautiful daughter, and his self-imposed goal: diving off the ten-meter platform. His eight-year-old sister Katinka, cheeky and fearless, dreams of Paris, is learning French in the meadow, and is training to swim 20 lengths of freestyle in one go. Robbie, the youngest and the apple of the family's eye, is different from other children; he hardly talks and daydreams a lot. Alf and Katinka think he should finally learn to swim properly.

Will Gmehling tells the story of how summer at the swimming pool helps the Bukowski children grow, how they boldly push their limits – not just in the pool – and recklessly go beyond them, with humor and great feeling. And always, his story is permeated by that blissful scent of water on hot stones, chlorine, and fries with mayo…

Entry to the swimming pool costs €1 for children. The free children's and youths' pass can be used for payment.

An event in cooperation with the Bremen swimming pools, the Bremen Literature House and the DLRG.
