The lecture by Bremen art historian Detlef Stein transports the audience into the fairytale-like and bizarre world of Hans Christian Andersen. Stein tells the story of a boy from the poorest of circumstances who sets out into the world with great confidence and a thirst for adventure – and conquers the world! His fairytales, such as "The Chinese Nightingale" or "The Little Match Girl," have touched millions of people across generations to this day.
The other Andersen, however, remained completely unknown , as he only delighted his closest friends and their children with his surprising paper cutouts and collaged books. Whether exotic travel impressions or fairytale characters, hangmen or fantastical creatures, an entire world unfolds in his paper works.
