Reading Art: Heinrich Zille and Max Liebermann: For artistic freedom?

Description

In terms of socio-political perspectives, the socially critical illustrator Heinrich Zille and the well-to-do, established painter Max Liebermann focuses Viktoria Bernadette Krieger on this era of social dissonance: Liebermann had recognized Zille's talent early on and championed him. Among other things, Liebermann was able to secure his participation in the groundbreaking black-and-white exhibitions of the Berlin Secession. "You know how much I value your talent," he told Zille in 1925. By this time, Liebermann had already successfully secured Zille's appointment to the Prussian Academy of Arts, and the illustrator was subsequently appointed professor.
Viktoria Bernadette Krieger is the exhibition and collection director of the Liebermann Villa, located on Wannsee in Berlin.
