As part of the Sustainability Action Weeks! Markus Gerstmann: A New Love!? – When AI Becomes a Relationship Partner. Digital Intimacy and the Worlds of Young People
Description
Artificial intelligence has long since become more than just a tool for information or entertainment – it is increasingly being used as an emotional counterpart. AI-based chatbots like "Replika" are particularly popular with young people who yearn for closeness, understanding, and connection. They offer conversations, relationship experiences, and even romantic interactions – anytime and without rejection. But what does this mean for growing up in a digitally shaped world? At this information evening, we will present current developments surrounding AI-supported relationship chats and discuss media education issues: Why do young people use such apps? Can digital relationships replace real closeness? What role do loneliness and identity formation play? How can parents support their children without being controlling? A media education presentation with time for exchange, questions, and discussion.
Markus Gerstmann is a media educator at the Bremen Service Bureau for Youth Information, with many years of experience working with young people, professionals, and parents. He combines current research on digital youth culture with concrete experience from media education.
