At the end of October 2026, the recruitment agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Turkey will mark its 65th anniversary. The first generation of "guest workers" from that era are now pensioners. Some of their children have also reached retirement age. Muhlis Kenter's photographs document work, everyday life, and leisure in West Germany during the 1970s and 1980s. With his photographs of people from Turkey, he makes visible what often went unnoticed: hard physical labor, difficult living conditions, social insecurity, and a life on the margins of society. Kenter photographs workers in mining, the metal industry, and textile factories. He accompanies educational projects for Turkish children and young people, focusing on expressive portraits. The photographs tell of challenges and successes, integration, shared values, and everyday coexistence. They invite dialogue about belonging, participation, and solidarity. In light of new migration movements, an aging society, and an increasing demand for skilled workers, these themes are gaining renewed relevance.
