"Christian Winterstein: "Who were Otto and Elise Hampel?"

Description

We don't know much about the people of the workers' resistance, the so-called "resistance from below." Who were Otto and Elise Hampel? The staged reading of the same name, by social worker and cultural activist Christian Winterstein together with Wilhelm Holthus, presents these two Berlin resistance fighters who protested against the Nazi regime with postcards between 1940 and 1942. The reading is based on surviving Gestapo and Nazi justice files, as well as the literary treatment of the Hampels' fate in Hans Fallada's novel "Every Man Dies Alone" (published posthumously in 1947). The juxtaposition of the content from the historical documents and passages from the novel provides an informative and engaging approach. The performance concludes with the question: What can we learn from the Hampels today? Christian Winterstein, born and raised in Bremen, has been studying the resistance activities of this working-class couple since 2015.
