"China, my father and I. About the rise of a superpower and what the Lee family from Wolfsburg had to do with it."
Description
A Retelling of China's Rise. On April 17, 1978, Wenpo Lee, in his early forties, was head of research at Volkswagen in Wolfsburg. He had a long journey behind him: as a child, he fled China for Taiwan, lived on the streets there until a teacher couple took him in, and he eventually went to Germany to study. He had put China behind him—until the day a Chinese delegation stood in front of the VW plant. Subsequently, Wenpo Lee became one of the architects of VW's business in China, thus making a significant contribution to the country's rise to economic power. Using his family's story, Felix Lee retells China's rapid development: incisive, multifaceted, full of anecdotes—and with the critical eye of a business journalist.
Felix Lee, born in Wolfsburg in 1975, worked as a business and political editor at taz from 2003 to 2022. From 2010, he was China correspondent in Beijing for nine years. His book *The Winner of the Crisis – What the West Can Learn from China* was published in 2011, followed in 2014 by the biography *Power and Modernity: China's Great Reformer Deng Xiaoping*.
