Barbara Alms & Gerhard Schäfer (eds.) present: Peace Policy in Bremen. Hartmut Drewes – For a World Without War and Violence.
Description
The book "Peace Policy in Bremen: Hartmut Drewes – For a World Without War and Violence" takes the death of Hartmut Drewes as an opportunity to take stock and critically reflect on Bremen's peace policy in a time of profound change and geopolitical shifts.
Hartmut Drewes (1939-2025) is among the most outstanding German "peace pastors" of the 20th and 21st centuries. Politically and theologically, Hartmut Drewes belongs to "the large family of radical pacifists" (Kurt Tucholsky). He was closely associated with the Bremen Peace Forum, founded in 1983, yet remained a profound theologian in all his peace-political activism. From 2000 onward, as a member of the steering committee, he significantly shaped the activities and initiatives of Bremen's most important peace organization. His extraordinary work for peace, disarmament, and international understanding over more than half a century is traced in this book, as is the work of the Peace Forum over the last 25 years. The book outlines the productive 1970s and 1980s of the Christian Peace Conference and the Bremen Church Congregations' Disarmament Initiative, in which Drewes played a crucial role. In addition to pressing current issues, the desire to draw a line under the past and how to deal with it, against the backdrop of the demand "Never again war! Never again fascism!", play an important role.
