Discover, experience, and shape democracy
"Places Tell Democracy Stories" brings history to life: A digital, interactive map reveals places where democracy was lived, fought for, or reimagined in everyday life – then and now. "Places Tell Democracy Stories" invites you to experience democratic history on tours: walks, guided tours, or themed routes through cities and regions. Citizens are invited to research their own contributions, create tours, and share their knowledge. This creates a growing network of places of remembrance, demonstrating that democracy doesn't just happen in parliaments, but everywhere – in neighborhoods, schools, libraries, and clubs.
During the pilot phase, initial tours are being developed in Bremen, Augsburg, Buxtehude, and Hanover to make democratic history tangible at the local level – on foot, by bicycle, or using public transport. In addition to well-known memorial sites, lesser-known places where democracy was and is practiced in everyday life are also highlighted – be it in workers' associations in the past, or today in neighborhood initiatives, school projects, or cultural centers.
The project operates openly and collaboratively. Stadtbibliothek, the TIB's Open Science Lab, and Wikimedia Germany are cooperating to make knowledge sustainably accessible. Through Wikidata and Wikipedia , the content remains freely available and part of an open, global knowledge space.
In addition, freely available educational materials (OER) are being developed that demonstrate step-by-step how sites of democratic history can be researched, documented, and published. Workshops and participatory formats support schools, associations, research institutions, and engaged individuals in becoming active democracy researchers themselves.
"Places Tell Stories of Democracy" strengthens awareness of local democratic processes, connects political education with digital participation, and promotes collaborative learning. In this way, the culture of remembrance comes alive – openly, inclusively, and with a focus on the future.
Democracy thrives on participation – get involved!
We will report on the further progress of the funding project, the location of the participation map and opportunities for participation here as the project progresses.
