Honey from the Vegesack library garden

There's a buzz and hum in Bremen's north: a few weeks ago, three bee colonies moved into the library garden in Vegesack. These busy little insects are not only fascinating to watch, but they also contribute to making our library garden more sustainable. The colleagues in Vegesack have only taken on the sponsorship of the bees, however. They are cared for by the Roose beekeeping operation from Zeven, which was looking for a location for three beehives in Bremen.

“The beekeeper checks on his colonies regularly,” explains Andrea Schröder, who looks after the bees at the Vegesack library. “It’s not easy to get as close to beehives as we do here,” she says. The beekeeper’s visits are always a good opportunity for patrons to watch the expert at work. And they certainly take advantage of it. “When the beekeeper was here recently to check on his bees, he was immediately surrounded by interested people,” Schröder recounts. If all goes well, the first Vegesack library honey should be harvested in the fall. 

Events centered around the world of bees are being planned for the coming year.
